Field shading not working consistently even when set to "Always"

i'm writing word doc , inserting fields things "date", "page number", "captions" , "in-text cross references", citations using endnote. want fields show grey shading can see ( i.e. don't regular text).

when turn on file-> options->field shading show it's not working...  <g class="gr_ gr_596 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_disable_anim_appear punctuation only-ins replacewithoutsep" data-gr-id="596" id="596">well</g> seems work fields such caption number , cross references captions, , reference list @ end of document (created endnote) not working date field, page number field, or (most importnantly) in-text endnote citations.

interestingly if type field in using either ctr+f9 date or page, rather using insert menu or use curly brackets endnote citations {} field show not consistently. have screenshot of examples of field shading can send if more explanation necessary.

can explain if actual problem or if there different field types , i'm not understanding difference? know older versions of word such 2003 , 2007 had no problems showing field shading fields.

have tried repairing office installation (via windows control panel > programs > programs & features > microsoft office (version) > change > repair)?

cheers
