disk2vhd efi vhdx vm fails to boot (solved)

edit:  able work around this.  i've read, bare metal restore physical virtual machine not supported, that's tried , worked beautifully.  thing went right today.

so, disk2vhd isn't needed (and we've seen, didn't work).  instead took these steps:

1. control panel -> file history.  after finishes searching drives, @ bottom left of page link system image backup.  run it, , select target drive backup.  used 64gb key drive.  next, show volumes backed up.  automatically selects (and cannot deselect) volumes required bare metal restore.  additional volumes optional.  you'll want deselect target drive backup.

2. after backup complete, either move drive on hyper-v host or access on network.

3. in hyper-v manager, create vhdx virtual disk backup drive.  create blank vhdx @ least size of original machine's system disk (which may have multiple volumes).  in case, 2tb disk, added 128gb sure.  isn't size of image backup, it's size of disk image backup taken.  made disks fixed size.  don't know if work otherwise.

4. create gen 2 virtual machine (this necessary me since original machine used efi boot).  on scsi host adapter, attach blank disk take image restore, , attach second disk containing image backup (this can deleted later).

5. create second scsi host adapter , attach dvd drive (also may deleted later).  not sure if need second adapter being cautious.  assign iso image original machine's install disc (windows 8.1 pro update 1, in case) dvd.  set dvd boot.

6. run vm , press key when prompted run dvd.  select repair option, , drill down until page option system image restore.  click on , select drive containing backup when prompted.  inform drive c: (your blank drive) wiped out , resized match original system drive backed up.  let run.  in case took maybe 3 or 4 minutes, sparsely populated 2tb drive.

7. after restore completes, should go.  after testing new vm, deleted second scsi disk backup image, dvd , host adapter.

=================================================

i ran disk2vhd on built windows 8.1 x64 machine.  conversion completed successfully, i'm having no luck finding right recipe booting in hyper-v on server 2012 r2 machine.  i've tried both gen 1 , gen 2 (with , without secure boot enabled).  in both cases apparently fails find boot loader.  virtual disk vhdx.

i ran disk2vhd twice.  once including additional volumes windows creates efi, , once without.  result same either way.

any appreciated.
