Forest Prep and Domain Prep
hello all, newbie here :)
can please give me someadvise on following.
we have windows 2003 r2 sp2 domain 20 domain controllers in various sites across uk. install out first windows 2008 r2 sp1 domain controller. before going perform forest prep , domain prep. have single top level domain.
what concerned if things go wrong, how can roll back, , additional steps should take before performing above ensure current domain in healthy state.
with regard roll in past have performed , authorative restore on part of ad successfully, aware of how execute this. have never done athorative restore on whole domain , in particular not shore if schema rolls or not? indeed authorative restore wise, depending on issue encountered?
also know there various tools check health of forest , dc's i.e. repadmin , dcdiag etc.. in addition these has written cool scripts health check prior , after forest , domain prep above?
any help, advise welcome
thanks

hello,
you can follow way add new os dcs domain http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/02/10/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2008-or-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx
for concerns, either adprep command works correct or nothing happens. no worry running adprep.
more important check the domain before starting solve existing problems. therefore use support tools , verify output files errors, solve them , go on upgrade new os dcs.
dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt
netdiag /v >c:\netdiag.txt [from each dc, netdiag may work isn't supported windows server 2008 , don't run on windows server 2008 r2]
repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt ["dc* place holder starting name of dcs if begin same (if more 1 dc exists)]
dnslint /ad /s "dcipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045)
if have concerns , think should check files please not post content here, instead upload them windows sky drive (skydrive.live.com) [with open access!] , add link here. /e in dcdiag scans complete forest, better run on cob.
