Restore process for a Hyper-V VM
hi all,
not sure if right forum post.
trying write backup , restore agent hyper-v using vss interfaces. have completed implementation of backup , seems working fine. have following documents part of backup each vm intend backup.
1. configuration file vm. (.xml file in "c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\hyper-v\virtual machines" directory). there folder same name backed .xml file.
2. virtual hard disk file(s) if vm "c:\users\public\documents\hyper-v\virtual hard disks" directory.
3. snapshot configuration files (.xml) if any, every snapshot created vm "c:\programdata\microsoft\windows\hyper-v\snapshots" directory. there directory same name backed up.
along above list of files, have backup components document , writer metadata document part of backup.
my confusion how ever starts restore phase. going through msdn documentation on hyper-v restore in following link:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd405549%28v=vs.85%29.aspx#virtual_restoring_the_virtual_machines
points 4 , 5 state :
4. each vm restored, hyper-v vss writer registers vm hyper-v management service. if vm restored non-default location, symbolic link created in default location linking location.
5. for each vhd restored, location compared 1 specified vm. if location different, configuration updated proper location.
for 4, please explain scenarios - why , when hyper-v writer restore vm non-default location? also, files restored non- default location? configuration file or files related backup?
for 5, question sort of similar 1 above. why , when vhd file's location change?
are above non-default/ alternate locations determined writer? or requester's (backup application's) responsibility figure them out?
i under impression new location decided based on path specified in "hyper-v settings" @ time of restore.
if go settings window of hyper-v server. there options modify "virtual machines path" , "virtual hard disks" path. need verify these paths , check if has changed before begin restore process?
the import process seems this. if change default path configuration files , vhd files in 'hyper-v server settings' (after exporting vm in server), during import process vm, configuration files , vhd files restored non-default location. there symbolic link in default configuration files folder. appears in line vss documentation hyper-v writer.
so, guess exact question : before restore operation, need verify if default paths configuration files , .vhd (and .avhd) files have changed after vm last backed up?
many in advance,
vj
