Inexperienced IT manager needs help with basic setup of AD without MS Exchange

hi there,

trying wrap head around setting active directory.

current situation is:

windows server 2003 on our "server", file , print server.  no web serving or on it.

13-15 client computers, running win xp pro.

set works, server has few shared folders on it, , on each client folders attached network drives.  each workstation has individual "account", named person sits @ desk, getting tired of micro-managing each box, , when moves different position, or people leave , replaced, have re-do accounts on affected box , such...

wish implement active directory on server, , allow alot of micro-management designed do.

have no idea how implement it!  can walk me through, or point me walkthrough, on setting basic implementation of active directory in environment stated above, (keeping in mind ms exchange not part of this; use individual installs of outlook , respective .pst files on each workstation)?!?  please?

input can give me!

setting active directory easy , anti-climatic.  running dcpromo on first domain controller.  after few answered questions during wizard , reboot, you'll have ad , running.

however, here reality.  reading few kb articles , white papers not prepare proper designing of active directory.  if going remain small environment, should able educate enough up, running, , manageable.  otherwise, recommed purchase few books and set test environment before proceed.  once begin ad journey, re-designing ad not easy , disruptive users.
