LUN limit with iSCSI (2012 R2)

hi. asked similar question before, , not looking lecture on best practice (although happy discuss architecture if people curious), have use case want address lots of iscsi luns on 2012 r2 machine. seem have hit limit of 255 mounted iscsi volumes. of documentation seems suggests limit per 'target', i'm bit unsure target means in context. possible mount more luns somehow? 'target' mean ip address , port? can have 255+ luns on 1 network card\hba if use multiple ip addresses (same) target.

thanks much!

there multiple software , hardware limitations. hardware 1 - cannot have more 255 (2^8) lus on single scsi device. that's spec there's 1 byte address lus. workaround can have multiple devices , here comes software limit quite lot of implementations create 1 target (device) , add lus cannot handle more 2^8 lus (last time i've checked ms target example of such implementation, may have been changed...). have issues on server (target) side - swap iscsi target vendor 1 know working. if have issues on client (initiator) side it's not software rather configuration think had more 1,000 lus working pre-r2 versions.

back architecture. first goes "server" (most of written iscsi targets can have multiple instances running bind different ip/port pair on same machine, again not sure ms one). yes, can have many servers on single host (software limitation). goes actual targets. can have multiple targets per server (software limitation). each target can have multiple lus , 2^16 (that's hardware limitation).

hope helped :)

starwind vsan [virtual san] clusters hyper-v without sas, fibre channel, smb 3.0 or iscsi, uses ethernet mirror internally mounted sata disks between hosts.
