Clients not reporting when downloading from Microsoft Update directly

microsoft windows server 2003 r2 – standard edition

quad xeon 2.0 ghz w/ 2.0 gb ram –(virtual machine)

running update services v. 3.2.7600.226

i have been given responsibility of managing our wsus  server , have configured service let clients updates microsoft update directly. question have have done this; our wsus server no longer gets updated information clients updates have been installed , ones still needed. our ad gpo configured have clients wsus server updates/approvals, assumption clients wsus server approvals of updates, download , install them windows update , report wsus status. have done no longer information clients. question #1.)is necessary download updates locally on wsus server in order have wsus service it’s intended , provide necessary reporting or question #2 is; there way configure wsus server described above , still clients report wsus server far it’s status.

certainly. disable option maintain "local content store" on wsus server. {where setting located?]

it appear did set value correctly. next step determine if client systems talking wsus server, or not. please following on 1 of these client systems:

  1. restart windows update service.
  2. wait 5 minutes.
  3. review entries in windowsupdate.log confirm how client configured.

but, truly, why want each , every 1 of client systems download own individual copy of each update file across internet connection, rather have wsus server download *one* copy, 1 time, , have clients copy file across *lan*, rather download internet?
[it's space issue on server. sysadmin needs rebuild server , reallocate space san. time being still wanted updates out clients]

how long rebuild going take? shouldn't take more day. since it's last week of month, when patching relatively inactive -- take server offline, rebuild it, , let clients ignored couple of days.

of course "space issue" may addressable less invasive methodologies.

  • how space being consumed ~\wsuscontent folder?
  • how space allocated wsus server san?
