Remote file sharing very slow

local environment:

windows sbs03 latest release.
dmz firewall w/ gateway
shared folder

remote environment:

two windows xp machines
dmz firewall w/ gateway

problem:

my remote users working in workgroup environment , have had slow, , frustrating time opening files on shared folder on our server. have setup desktops use vpn connection. click connect , establishes connection, go computer , click on mapped drive , view files. not part of domain, vpn connection requires them use user , password have setup in domain users. use routing , remote access on server end. can not life of me figure out why connection slow.

what have done ensured checksum offload turned off.  i have reviewed settings on both firewalls , nothing out of ordinary. have adjusted bandwidth in firewalls , has made no difference. anti virus not cause , not scan files opened , closed. can provide ideas should try may not have already? im sure there pretty simple explanation this!

first of all, use nttcp & perfmon determine the real final throughput available to xp client. if number appear abnormally low, newtork need investigate.

if network good, concentrate on xp client. windows explorer or office applications. check if have same delay opening files locally. observe network activity netmon 3.3. observe remote io activity process monitor.
