Win8 upgrade + WSE, My findings.
in 24 hour window, updated server whs2011 wse , main desktop win7 win8. used no-domain registry hack. here findings:
wse + win7 client registry hack = server features appear work fine. able perform client backups.
i upgraded desktop win7 win8
wse + win8 client, post-upgrade = not access dashboard (got password error), had access dashboard via rdp. also, client backups failed.
i reinstalled connector (after checking ensure registry hack still in place). connector reinstalled forced me join domain. booted, saw files gone, decided didn't have time transfer, , did system restore. may try again tomorrow. if not, roll win7.
has been able win8 client work without joining domain?

first, answer question, yes, worked me. again, did a clean install of win8 (i would never, ever consider upgrading an os as i've seen far many problems occur people that).
other points of interest comments: your files aren't "gone" when client joins domain. under local user account (not domain account) on client. can still login local acccount putting <computername>\<username> instead of <domainname>\<username>. also, if worse comes worse , cannot registry modification work block joining domain during connector software installation, remove client domain after installing connector software.
