Configuring a Windows Server 2003 install on a new server box, by a clueless newbie
situation: brand new server box, copy of windows server 2003 enterprise, , lack of network admin expertise. install location not business location, home cable broadband , netgear router, 3 independent non-network pc's connect , access internet. several questions arise in how configure new server box. fyi, purchase has been made, , has been enlisted assist setting new server box.
server desired game server, allowing remote access players, accessing server through built in game client, not server logins. remote game admin users given server login accounts, , restricted access, limited defined game share in filesystem, accomplished creating security groups define restrictions.
1. access issues.
a. how dns have set make server independent device on router, function point of presence on internet, remote users can connect using either ip or registered domain name? network domain only, not including other pc's sharing connection. possible? if not, kind of setup going required? "gotchas" approach? (i understand static ip address assuredly needed)
b. desired give remote game admin users access remote web desktop. there special considerations, or speclal configurations needed this?
c. server administered via remote administration terminal service. users in server box location non-technical. there special setup considerations?
2. iis andftp
a. server must configured allow ftp access, @ 2 levels. anonymous ftp connections should able download files only, , remote game admin users should able upload, move, delete download files in ftp area. how accomplished?
b. server have iis web services configured (i realize iis installation required ftp, above). there web applications created assist remote game administration, file management, , database access (mysql installed database product). there special considerations introduced dns setup described above?
3. pagefile
server box has 2 quad core xenon cpus, , 4gb of ram. there special considerations on dual cpu box in setting pagefile? single 8gb static pagefile sufficient?
4. raid hotswap (this isn't strictly windows server question, while we're @ it...)
server box using raid 5 array of 4 500gb hard drives. intel matrix software provide raid functionality. there issues hotswapping drives on disk failure, or "gotchas" aware of? virtual disk space partitioned 100 mb c drive (os only), 150 mb d drive (for applications) , e drive (the rest of space, approx 750 mb, data, game folders, web folders, etc.)

-go command prompt , ipconfig /all on server, ip configuration info , assigned info fixed ip server.
-go netgear router interface administration etc , configure a port forwarding. need forward 3 ports: 80 access iis, 21 ftp , 3389 remote desktop/terminal services connection. outside users access of these services, give them public ip address obtained isp , respective port number. (it adviseable obtain fixed public ip isp or use opendns configure dynamic ip). can find public ip router interface.

if remote admins require manage users, yes give them access limit respective functions. can configure local policy give them needed access
