DNS performance question

hello,

we attempting move our remote infrastructure on active directory in order make easier manage our network.  in order that, have shift our dns servers linux on windows (we going server 2008 r2).  can imagine, require thorough performance testing, we’ve done.  decided move 1 location on test bed in order let run while.  after couple of months received complaint from (hosted customer) that dns queries failing hostnames 1 of our measurement locations happened 1 switched windows dns.  hostnames (servera.customer.com, serverb.customer.com, serverc.customer.com).  windows dns server returning “server failed” error message.  decided @ point switch dns @ location linux time being since linux box had no such problem.

after investigation, found couple of things:

-by disabling flag on windows dns server, hostnames above able resolve successfully.  flag edns set 0 (disabled) following instructions in article:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832223  after change, nslookups successful.

-even though have disabled , removed ipv6 windows dns server system (no ipv6 interfaces show ipconfig command), whenever perform nslookup server hostnames above performs aaaa query (ipv6).  i’ve read default behavior windows i’m not sure whether or not that’s contributing problem.  linux servers perform (ipv4) lookups same hostnames.

i performed dns performance analysis using our web measurement data (approximately 3000 web pages per hour) comparing bind on linux windows dns , found significant performance differences.

can point me information dns performance?

hi,

thanks posting here.

how did query domain name using nslookup , specific parameters?

if want monitor dns performance , build in performance-monitoring utilities first choice :

            performance-monitoring utilities

you can performance monitoring dns servers using additional service-specific counters measure dns server performance. these counters accessible through system monitor, provided in performance snap-in.

when use system monitor, can create charts , graphs of server performance trends on time of dns servers. these can further studied , analyzed determine if additional server tuning needed.

through measurement , review of server metrics on period of time, possible determine performance benchmarks , decide if further adjustments can made optimize system.

meanwhile, please refer link below provide suggestions morning , optimizing dns service :

thanks.
