Can't do anything to unallocated space?

dell pe r310

four 2tb drives in raid 5.  6 tb total.

when go disk management in w2k8 r2 sp1, see disk 0 consists of

100 mb (system reserved)

488.28 gb (c: , healthy)

1559.62 gb (unallocated)

3539.50 gb (unallocated)

when right-click on 1559.62, option new simple volume.  when right-click on 3539.50, option properties.  know why?

and also, why aren't 1559 , 3539 combined 1 allocated space in first place????

my plan have 2 combined can make 1 big partition

assuming had bios not set uefi, drive propably partitioned mbr. (only option boot drives when not using uefi). mbr partitions have 2tb limit. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/guid_partition_table)

unfortunately there no way convert partition gpt supports larger partitions, either can backup system , go perc controller expose raid 5 2 logical drives, smaller system drive , rest data, or install again setting bios uefi.
